What Is Perio Protect®?

Perio Protect® is a dentist-prescribed at-home gum care system that uses custom Perio Trays® to deliver medication below the gumline.

The trays are designed to help place medication into periodontal pockets, where brushing, flossing, and routine home care may not reach effectively.

Perio Protect is not a replacement for professional gum disease treatment. It may be recommended as part of a personalized periodontal care plan that can also include professional cleanings, scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance, or other treatment.

How Perio Protect Works

Your dentist evaluates your gums and determines whether Perio Protect may be appropriate for your condition. If recommended, custom trays are made to fit your mouth.

Medication is placed into the trays as directed by your dentist. The trays are then worn for the prescribed amount of time so the medication can reach areas below the gumline.

Your dentist will provide instructions for how often to use the trays, how long to wear them, and how Perio Protect fits into your overall gum disease treatment plan.

Who May Benefit from Perio Protect?

Perio Protect may be recommended for some patients with gum disease, periodontal pockets, bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or recurring inflammation.

It may also be discussed for patients who need ongoing periodontal maintenance or additional home care support after scaling and root planing.

Not every patient is a candidate. Your dentist will evaluate your gums, pocket depths, bone support, home care routine, and overall oral health before recommending treatment.

Benefits of Dentist-Supervised At-Home Gum Care

Perio Protect and Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease is caused by plaque bacteria that irritate the gums and may lead to periodontal pockets, bone loss, loose teeth, and tooth loss if left untreated.

Professional periodontal treatment focuses on reducing harmful bacteria, removing plaque and tartar, and creating an environment where the gums can heal and be maintained.

Perio Protect may be used as an additional home care tool to support the treatment plan recommended by your dentist or periodontist.

Questions & Answers

Is Perio Protect a replacement for scaling and root planing?

No. Perio Protect is not a replacement for professional gum disease treatment. Your dentist may recommend it as part of a larger periodontal care plan, which may include scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance, or other treatment.

How often do I use the trays?

Usage depends on your dentist’s instructions and your specific periodontal condition. Your dentist will explain how often to use the trays and how long to wear them.

Can Perio Protect help with bleeding gums or bad breath?

Bleeding gums and persistent bad breath can be signs of gum disease. Perio Protect may help support gum disease management for some patients, but your dentist should first evaluate the cause of your symptoms.

Who decides what medication is used?

Your dentist determines whether Perio Protect is appropriate and provides instructions for the medication, frequency, and treatment plan.

Do I still need regular dental visits?

Yes. Perio Protect is used at home, but regular dental visits and periodontal maintenance are still important for monitoring gum health, pocket depths, inflammation, and bone support.

Perio Protect and Payment Options

The cost of Perio Protect depends on your gum health, the custom trays, the medication prescribed, and how it fits into your periodontal treatment plan.

Greenberg Dental & Orthodontics works with many insurance plans and offers payment options to help make periodontal care more manageable.
